TPS61165: Can TPS61165 support two led strings in parallel? 10 leds each string?

Part Number: TPS61165
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61185, TPS61177A

Hi ,

My customer want to use TPS61165 in a led string case, two led strings in parallel, 10 leds each string.  they mentioned  each string need 150mA current. and datasheet declares TPS61165 can output to 38V and 300mA output current is no problem. May I have your suggestion if it is ok in this case. if not, what is your recommendation? thanks.

  • Hi Yue,

yes, TPS61165 can support 2 string up to 10 leds each string. Can you tell me your input voltage range and forward voltage of your LED? If the input voltage is low, it may trigger the internal current limit with high output power.

  • Sean,
Thanks for reply. 12v input and forward voltage of LED is 3.1v. Are there some risk to use like this?
  • Hi Yue,
Let's take a simple calculation: Iin_avg=(Vout*Iout)/Vin/Efficiency={(3.1*10+0.2)*0.15*2}/12/0.85=0.92A. Considering the current ripple, it may trigger the internal current limit(1.2A typical). I think there will be some risk for this appication. For 12V input, I recommend to use TPS61177A or TPS61185 . By the way, what's your application? PC?Notebook?
    Best Regards
