TPS54A20: Vin range flexibility?

Part Number: TPS54A20

Hi guys,

I have an opportunity for a power supply and TPS54a20 almost fits...

They need 4.5V-14.5V to 1.1V @ 5A to power cyclone V core rail. Size and transient performance is important. Everything matches minus the Vin range.

What happens with TPS54a20 during momentary input transients that breach the recommended Vin range (when nominal is 12V)?

Thanks,

Brian

  • Brian,

That is the gray area between recommended maximum input voltage (14 V) and absolute maximum input voltage while switching (15 V).  Above 14 V and below 15 V input, the TPS54A20 is guaranteed not to be damaged by the input voltage, but any specifications in the EC are no longer guaranteed.  I typically do not recommend operating above the 14 V limit, but it is up to you if you want to risk it.

  • Brian,

I just saw you want 4.5 V minimum. TPS54A20 minimum input is 8 V, so it will not work for you anyway.
