BQ21040: LED Indicator not working

Hello Team,

My customer is has noticed that the LED between CHG and OUT is not illuminating when current is being supplied to the battery. Therefore, it would seem as though the internal FET is not going to ground when the device is charging.

They are trying to use this pin to directly indicate the charge status.

Connection are as follows

1 TS – no connection

2 Out-  VCC for battery

3 CHG – LED – Resistor – VCC USB

4 ISET – 680 Ohm to ground

5 GND – GND

6 VIN-  VCC USB decoupled

Added 10k at TS

  • Then charging LED worked
  • Tried on another board and the LED did not light when charging

Also, they manually cycled the TS pin and did get the CHG pin to go low and illuminate the LED. Unfortunately, it is not reliably turning on, so they wanted to see if we can provide some guidance on what may be going on here.

Best Regards,

  • Hello
The bq24040 CHG pin is the only indicator and it is designed to be active when first fast charge is in progress, recharge are not indicated. Cycle the input power will restart the device and CHG will be active again
Another device to look at is the bq24010 and bq24080 family of parts, they have two status pins that will indicate more charger modes.
  • Bill,

Thanks for the quick response on this one.

Ill work with the engineer to evaluate if the bq24010 or bq24080  fit better for their requirements.

    Best Regards
