TPS92518: capacitors for VIN1 and VIN2

Part Number: TPS92518

Hello

My customer has two questions.

In the TPS92518EVM, following 2.2uF/100V X7r ceramic caps are used.

For ch1: C4,C5,C6,C2 and C3

For ch1: C7,C8.C9,C22 and C23.

Please advise about customer's questions as follwing.

Q1

If ch2 were not used, C7~C8, C22and C23 can be removed?

It should be depend on application ( decieded by customer's board evaluation) ,but how do you think in gerneral?

Q2

Do you think C2~C6 can be used electrolytic cap 10uF ? I had recommended customer to use ceramic caps because of

ripple characteristics is better than electrolytic.

Please let me know why all of these caps are ceramic cap.

Please give us your opinion.

Best Regards

  • Hello Kanji,

Q1, yes, if channel two is not used they are not needed.

Q2, no, the ceramic is used because it has lower impedance at the operating frequency. Electrolytic capacitors have higher ESR and also are not good for filtering 100's of KHz ripple. The design of the capacitors and values depends on what is sourcing Vin and what the power level of the TPS92518 is. The number of ceramic capacitors on the EVM is to ensure it works in a lab environment with the possibility of impedance from the source such as test leads.
