Question of gate driver

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC27710, UCC27712, UCC27531, UC2844, LM555, UCD7100, UC3844

We have the question about gate driver.

We are looking for the IC and circuit Under the following conditions.

Please tell us the recommended IC or circuit.

      Frequency=50kHz

      Duty=20% fixed

      Switch : IGBT

We operate IGBT as duty 20% fixed regardless of voltage conditions.

Best regards,

Takahiro Nishizawa

  • Hello Takahiro,

Thank you for the interest in TI gate driver products. I have some questions about the circuit and application.

I see the power switch is and IGBT but can you provide a simple diagram of the power devices connection and power train? Is the configuration with a high side and low side MOSFET in a half bridge configuration? This is common in many topologies. Or is this the IGBT  switch with the emitter referenced to ground, which will be a low side driver configuration.

For the half bridge, high side and low side MOSFET the UCC27710 and UCC27712 620V High-Side Low-Side drivers are used driving IGBT's in many applications.

If this is a low side power device only, the UCC27531 is a single channel driver targeted for driving IGBT's.

If this answers your questions please confirm with the green button on the thread.

    Richard Herriing

We have asked another question With the following thread.
    e2e.ti.com/.../2673971

Please check the attached PDF document in this URL about diagram.

We try to use UC2844 as gate driver.
And we want to fix the duty cycle 20% regardless voltage conditions.
We want to know the recommended IC other than UC2844.

We think that UCC27531 is good. We want to operate single IGBT switch.
Do you know how to set duty cycle 20% fixed?
Can you show the circuits if we can use UCC27531 as duty 20% fixed.
And Can UCC27531 be fixed the duty cycle 20% regardless voltage conditions by external circuit setting?

    Best regards,

  • Thank you for your answer!

    We have new question.

We think single low-side driver is good.
    But UCC27531 doesn't have ISENSE.
Do you know recommended low-side driver that has ISENSE?

    Our customer uses this FET.

  • Hello Takahiro,

For generating the drive signal oscillator, one option would be to use a part intended for this purpose such as the LM555 timer which datasheet can be found at this link.

In section 7.4.2 in the LM555 datasheet the application to generate the signal with specific period and duty cycle is covered. The VCC to the LM555 timer circuit may need to be fixed but can be just a zener circuit from the input VDD. The output of the LM555 can be used to drive the input of the gate driver,

Let us know if this solution can work for your application.

  • Hello Takahiro,
Regarding the question about the recommended driver with ISENSE, or current sense. You can consider the UCD7100 driver which has the internal current sense function. The driver information can be found at this link: www.ti.com/.../UCD7100
I addressed the question about how to generate the fixed duty cycle signal for the driver in another post.
Let us know if these posts addresses your questions by confirming with the green button on the thread. If you have additional questions you can always ask again on the thread.

    About LM555,
Can this IC use for UCC27531 about duty 20% fixed?
(We understand UCC27531 doesn't have ISENSE pin.)

    Best regards,

    Takahiro Nishizawa
  • Hello Takahiro,
I think I understand your question, but please confirm.
The LM555 circuit can be used for the 20% duty cycle generation for the input signal to the UCC27531. The two IC's can provide the high drive current gate drive at the duty cycle and frequency target.

Our customer uses FA5510 as gate driver.

    felib.fujielectric.co.jp/.../details.htm

This IC has Triangular wave comparison PWM.
Do you know the recommended gate driver that has Triangular wave comparison PWM and can use duty 20% fixed.
We want to know equivalent of FA5510.

  • Hello Takahiro,
I reviewed the Fuji FA5510 and it is a PWM controller similar to the UC3844 and the UC3809.
Let me confirm the circuit to have one of these controllers operate as a fixed oscillator. I think they both can work but I will review and confirm.

    Richard Herring
  • Hello Takahiro,
The UC3844 and similar controller devices are supported by colleagues who are more familiar with these devices. I am going to refer you to applications engineers who cover these devices. You should get a response from them soon.

  • Hi Takahiro-san,

I am working on the circuit but need another day to verify it. Sorry for the delay.

  • UCC28C43.docxHi Takahiro-san,

I have attached a circuit that should run at 25% duty cycle. I dont think I can get it lower that than. The circuit uses the RC OSC pin waveform as an input to the CS pin. The OSC pin is buffered from the CS pin by an NPN transistor.

  • Thank you for your answer!

We want to change duty cycle 20% fixed.
Please tell us the point of change to set duty 20% about your attached document?
And do you have any formula to change duty cycle about your attached document?

    Best regards,
