TPS61169: About Open LED Protection

Hello,

 

 Regarding to Open LED Protection on TPS61169, my customer is asking a question.　

(Question)

When this protection keep continue, is there any problem in TPS61169?

TPS61169 will be used for LED backlight and they will product two model equipment.

(model1)Supporting LED backlight (model2) No LED backlight

They will use same PCB for each model and in case of no LED backlight model,

backlight circuit is only TPS61169. (Only LED is removed.)

In this case, open LED Protection is keep continue until power off or enabled by toggling the CTRL pin.

Is there any problem on their TPS61169 design ?

    Hi Tao,

        It's ok to power up without LED backlight model. Because it will shutdown device after several switch cycles.

        The TPS61169 monitors the voltage at the SW pin and FB pin during each switching cycle. The circuitry turns off the switch FET and shuts down the IC when both of the following conditions persist for 3 switching cycles: (1) the SW voltage exceeds the VOVP threshold, and (2) the FB voltage is less than 30 mV. As the result, the output voltage falls to the level of the input supply. The device remains in shutdown mode until it is enabled by toggling the CTRL pin.
