BQ20Z95: Update Status to turn off updating

Part Number: BQ20Z95

I have an old product based on the BQ20Z95. I wish to turn off the updating (QEN). Looking at the manual it appears the correct way to do this is using Manufacturer access. I have two batteries, one with Update staus reading 05, the other 04 (and I have seen 07 in the past); Valid numbers for the update code from the Tech Ref Manualare 00 - 03. Can you please advise what I should do to turn off the updating and perhaps resolve the conflict of information.   Many thanks

  • Hi,

Your thread's been assigned to me. Please expect a reply within 24 hours.
  • If you turn off gauging, then you will not have any tracking of capacity, updating of Qmax or Ra. Why would you want to do this? Update status can range from 00-06. 03 is not a valid value, the valid values are 00, 04, 02, 06. If you still want to stop gauging and turn off QEN, set update status to 00.
  • Hi Batt, Many thanks. The reason for turning it off is that the gauge seems to be (quickly) getting to a point where the Full Charge Capacity is 3.5Ah whereas the battery is 21Ah. We are getting the 21Ah from normal use but the gauge does not reflect this. The Ra table seems unchanged (default values) and Qmax appear unchanged - all are 21000mAh. The gauge "learned" capacity however reduces to around 3500mAh after only a few charge cycles. We haven't seen this before so want to try it with tracking turned off to see what happens.

The attached jpg advises that valid values for the update status are 0x00, 0x02, 0x04 and 0x06 but the table suggests min value 0x00,max value 0x03. If we try to set a value higher than 03 using the dataflash screen we get an error message.

When we set the update status to 0x00, the QEN Flag remaiins on in the Operational Status register.

  • Hi Dave,

The TRM is wrong. It needs to be updated. I'll inform the systems engineer about that. You need a reset after changing the df to disable QEN.
  • Many thanks Batt
