SM74611: SM74611 reverse bias protection in photovoltaic module application

Part Number: SM74611
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: STRIKE,

Hello,

I'd like to know if can provide some advise how to protect or what is the durability of SM74611 in reverse bias? Datasheet says that Abs. Max. DC reverse voltage is 30V, but in real world (not direct lighting strike) there is a fast and higher voltage transient - Shottky diodes with reverse voltage 45V can be easily damaged.

Thank you, Jiri

  • Hi Jiri,

Yes, abs max rating is a concern during surge strikes.
You could use bidirectional TVS at the input to clamp the volages to safe levels.

Could you please share surge strike requiements, do you need comply to certain standard?

    Regards,
    Kari.
  • Dear Kari,

I found only few material on the internet. The best was this: link
I do not rely on some standards but I would like to create a "bullet proof" photovoltaic junction box and it means: shape of the lightning induced voltage gradient could be 6/350us or 8/20us and the energy of the strike up to 300-400 mJoules. It should survived more then one strike and I am not sure if there is a TVS (or varistor?) of such parameters.

Any way, if we are able to find some solution I can manage some test in a high voltage and current laboratory...

    Thank you, Jiri

  • Hi Jiri,

SM74611 can support maximum 30V reverse bias voltage.

    Regards,
    Kari.
