BQ24172: To prevent loading from input power

Part Number: BQ24172

Finally I selected BQ24172 as the power management IC.

As mentioned by Eric in my previous question, as I do not want to draw current to the system loading (because the loading current is too large for the input power adapter), can I just disconnect the system load from the input source? Please refer to the below picture which is the evaluation board circuit of BQ24172.

Also, as I cut the connection, the input power adapter will not connect to the battery power "Vbat". Can I just short the connection of the FET driven by "BATDRV"?

When I start the system load, if the product is still connecting to the input power adapter, do I need to pull ISET low just like the evaluation board to disable the charging?

If I do not disable the charging while starting the load, is that the IC still drawing current from the power adapter but limited by the charging current (here is 2A), and the battery will supply the remaining power to the load?

Thank you very much!!

  • Hi,

Yes, the bq24172 may be configured for charging the battery only. Please refer to Figure 25. Typical Application Schematic With Single-Cell Unremovable Battery on the d/a and ignore the SYSTEM connection.

    Thanks,

    Ning.

  • Hi Ning,

Thanks for answering my first questions. Could you also answer these two question?

When I start the system load, if the product is still connecting to the input power adapter, do I need to pull ISET low just like the evaluation board to disable the charging?

If I do not disable the charging while starting the load, is that the IC still drawing current from the power adapter but limited by the charging current (here is 2A), and the battery will supply the remaining power to the load?

    Thank you very much.
  • Hi,

    2. It depends on if your application needs charging at the same time or not.
    3. If the adaptor input is still valid for the charger, the charger will try to achieve 2A charging current. Whether the battery will supply power to the load or not depends on how the load is connected.

    Thanks,

    Ning.
