TPS54531: input capacitor selection

Part Number: TPS54531

Hi,

Our customer considers using electrolytic capacitors for input capacitors.
We understand that ceramic capacitors are recommended in 9.2.2.4 of datasheet P.14. Is there any problem?
I believe that it is usable if the conditions of equations (6) and (7) are permitted.
If you have problems, please let me know your concerns.

Best regards,
Yuto Sakai

  • Hi Yuto,

    1. Electrolytic capacitors can be used if it can handle the input ripple.
    2. Additionally, a small 0.01 μF capacitor is needed for high frequency filtering. It is critical in EMI and layout. You can refer to the Figure25. in datasheet. We must use a input bypass capacitor.
