BQ76PL455A-Q1: Queries related to BMS for Automotive Application.

Part Number: BQ76PL455A-Q1

hello All,

I have promoted the device BQ76PL455A-Q1 to one og my customer for Automotive BMS Application.

below are some queries , plz help to answer the below queries :

1) What settings are required from the Host MCU?Are there some default values?

2) Are the balancing voltages settable as per user requirement?

3) How is the battery protected/isolated from the load in case of any faults?

4) In case the BQ76PL455A-Q1 only provides voltage protection or monitoring, then which part would you suggest for current protection as well. Or would the user need to design a discrete current protection circuit?

5) Current protection entails single path or dual path?

 Regards

Mandar

  • Hi Mandar,
    Thanks for promoting PL455A.
    1. Not clear what you are asking. You can check example code and software user's guide from TI product folder.
    2. Yes, user's requirements.
    3. System has to design proper protection circuits.
    4. PL455A doesn't support current protection at all. It means discrete protection or other protections are needed.
    5. Not clear with the question.

    thanks
  • thank you for your feedback Mr. Roger . i am sending this link to customer so that he can reply directly .

    meanwhile , can u elaborate point 3 & 4 in detail ..

    3. about protection circuits & Isolation.

    4. recommended battery protection / current protection .

    Regards

    Mandar

  • Hi Roger

I am the customer who Mandar refers to.

Thank you for your reply.Much appreciated.

Please find a rough block sch for the system under discussion attached to this post.

As you can see above , I am looking for a similar solution.

    I have asked earlier

    1) does PL455A have any default values? or it awaits instructions from the host MCU?

    2) I have shown how the protections should be present above. Is there any other allied solution present which does this?

3)Single path means having the CFET (Charging FET ) and the DFET (Discharging FET ) in series and dual path is self explanatory.

Can you please guide me so that we can move ahead?

  • Let me respond one at a time.

    1. PL455A is slave mode. Host has to instruct PL455A. And, PL455A doesn't have ways to control the FETs.

    2. If it is industrial application then we have integrated solution. PL455A is just monitor and feed voltage info to Host and host controls the FET.

    3. CBET and DFET will be control by uC or other ICs. PL455A will only monitor Batteries. It has no current sensing capability as well. It means you must have INA, hall or something to measure the current and feed info to host and host to control the FETs.

PL455A is slave IC. It has no intelligent.
