TPS61166: VO discharge behavior when OVP is asserted

Part Number: TPS61166

Hello application team,

I have a question about TPS61166.

How the charge on VO boosted is discharged when OVP is asserted?
From the block diagram on the datasheet, there is no discharge circuit seen on the VO. Is the charge stayed for long interval or is there any invisible discharge function?
If there is something, could you tell me the discharge impedance?

Thanks in advance,
Shinya Sawamoto

  • Hi Shinya,
Thanks for your question about TPS61166, but I'm sorry for that, bacaues TPS61166 is a very old device. It's difficult for us to check with design about the internal circuit. From the figure15 on datsheet, it shows that when it triggers OVP, the device will turn off switch and will not shutdown the device. When the voltage on VO pin drops to safety range, it will swithes again. And ther is description about the OVP:
"To prevent the PWM switch and the output capacitor from exceeding maximum voltage ratings, an over votlage protection circuit turns off the boost switch as soon as the output voltage at the VO pin exceeds the OVP threshold. Simultaneously, the isolation switch opens. The regulator resumes PWM switching after the VO pin voltage falls 0.6 V below the threshold. This function provides protection for open LED protection as well."
Hope it will help you. Thanks.
    Best Regards
    Sean
  • Hi Sean,
Thank you so much for your very quick response. The figure 15 can solve my question.
