BQ40Z50-R1: Battery pack aggregation

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R1

Hello,

I want to connect two 2S2P battery packs (based each on the BQ40Z50-R1) together with a Y cable to form a big battery pack.

Someone told me that it is not good because corrosion would happen between connectors. Also battery packs would pass their time to charge each other.

Can you please confirm,

What would be the best solution to do the aggregation?

Thank you,

Michel

  • The main problem will definitely be if one pack is at a higher voltage than the other pack when they are connected together. The current will rush from the higher voltage pack to charge the other pack and you might trip an overcurrent protection on one or both packs. You could connect them with a resistor to limit the current and wait until they become equalized/balanced, then remove the resistor. However, the best method would be to use some external circuitry (diodes or switches) to isolate both packs and treat them independently for charging and discharging.
  • thank you for the response.
Any suggestion of any schematics for diodes/switches?

    Thank you
    Michel
  • I reply to myself...so I would do like the drawing? value/model of the blocking diode?. Thx . Michel

  • Hi Michel,

This would be an improvement, but we cannot advise how to best make this connection for your system. You need to carefully consider how the protections might work in the case of different fault conditions.

    Best regards,
