BQ25606: Selecting charging current to either 500mA for SDP and 1A for everything else

Part Number: BQ25606

Hello,

I am currently using the BQ25606 to power a system and charge 3.7V 2600mAh Li-Ion Battery.

I have configured the ILIM resistor to 475ohms and ICHG resistor to 681ohms, approximately 1A charging current. Currently the D+/D- pins are left floating to set charging current at 1A set by ILIM resistor.

Can the BQ25606 input current limit setting from D+/D- detection be able limited to either 500mA (when connected to SDP) or current set by ILIM pin (when connected to any other adapter)? If D+/D- are connected to the USB input does the IC always set the charging current based on the D+/D- detection?

Thank You,

Jobby

  • Hi Jobby:

D+/D- can detect different charge ports and set the input current limit accordingly. IINDPM sets the charge current only when adaptor is detected as a unknown adaptor.
  • Hi Hong,

Thank you for your response. However, I am trying to limit the input charging current to either 500mA when connected to SDP (computer USB Port) or 1A when connected to wall adapter (Any unknown adapter). Is there a way to configure the D+/D- pins to ONLY detect these two conditions and nothing else?

    Thanks,
    Jobby
  • Here is my suggestion, set both the charge current limit and charge current at 1A. For SDP, no problem, the input current is limited at 500mA. For other known adapters, the input current limit could be 1A to 2.4A, but the charge current will be 1A always. For unknown adapters, the input current limit is 1A and charge current will be 1A. Does this work for you?
  • Hi Hong,

Thanks again for the response. That clears up most of my confusion. However, does that mean if the device is plugged into a SDP (input current limit = 500mA), will the battery try to charge at 1A (since ICHG pin is set to 1A)? Is the charging current fully independent from Input current limit?

    Thanks,

    Jobby

  • Even ICHG is set to 1A but if SDP is detected, the charger input current is limited 500mA. Yes, charging current and input current is independent, but charge current cannot exceed the input power limit (input current limit).
