BQ24115: How to design a 3s lipo balance charger

Part Number: BQ24115
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24172, BQ24170, BQ40Z50-R2, BQ4050

Hello,

I've been searching the web for a 3S lipo balance charger and I cannot seem to find any good designs. This chip claims it can charge 3 cell lipos, but I see no application for it. I also don't see where the individual cells connect for balancing. What products do I need to make a 3s balance charger? Are there any reference designs?

  • AJ,

The battery charger provides charging function only. You can also check BQ24170 and BQ24172 for your application. There are separated ICs for cell balancing. The expert for the cell balancing will have recommendation for the balancing ICs.
  • Hi AJ,

you can select bq4050 or bq40z50-R2 for a 3s gauge w/ cell balancing.

You can use the parametric search in the future for finding the best parts for your battery.

  • Id like to jump in on this thread and also express an interest in getting more specific information for a design for a 3cell li-Polymer pack.  At the moment I use a classic plugged device(BQ 4056) which is standard for charging li-po packs.  Im trying move to a cost effective wireless charging if the 3cell batteries but its difficult to navigate through all the various options.  Please help us put a design together(I can whip it up in eagle if i get some specifics).

  • Hi Adam,

This question seems to have gotten lost. For any new questions, it is best to start a new thread. This thread is assigned to our gauging team who will not be able to help with charger questions. I'll go ahead and close this thread - Please ask your question again referencing one of the charger devices so it gets assigned to the right experts.

    Thanks,
    Matt
