BQ24650: Solar panel charger circuit needed for 6V, 12V and 24V solar to charge the lithium battery 3.7V

Part Number: BQ24650

Hi,

I’m thinking to use bq24650 part but I’m not sure it would work for my application.

I need to charge the lithium battery 3.7V by solar panels 6V, 12V and 24V. When I use 12V or 24V solar panel I would like to use the main power straight away rather than just charge the battery. But 6V solar panel I would only need to charge the battery.

It would be only one solar panel connected. Should I add some voltage detection circuit to switch between the 6V or 12V solar panel? Please advise. Do you have any existing designs? Thanks!

  • Emilija,

I am not aware of an existing design like you suggest but it should be possible to place 2 PFETs, source tied together, directly to your system and only turn the FETs if panel voltage is >= 12V. In fact, you could use a resistor divider, tied to the panel output, to drive the gate of a NFET with source at ground and drain at the gates of the PFETs.  Keep in mind that at 12V and 24V panels, the system current would not be available to charge the battery.
