LM4121: Behavior of output short-circuit of device

Part Number: LM4121

Hi,

I am considering the circuit using the LM4121 device.
Among them, I have questions about the behavior of the device, so I ask you a question.

When the output of the device shorts, when it flows up to 30mA, it is described in the data sheet.
For example, when the input voltage is 12V, the loss of the device is 360mW.
The device's power dissipation is 350mW as absolute maximum rating.
When the loss exceeds the maximum rating, what is the state of the device?
Is the device burning?

Best regards,

  • Hi Kaji,

The state of the device depends on certain factors. Because this condition violates ABS MAX then prolonged short circuit condition at 12V and 30mA can cause damage to the device. I do not know what type of damage can happen. The value of 350mW is based on the Tj of the device.

Another case is if this device has an internal thermal shutdown then the device can shutdown. I am asking my internal team if this device has it because it in not specified on the datasheet.
