BQ24161: Termination Current Question

Part Number: BQ24161
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25600, BQ25601
I am currently doing a project with BQ24161RGET as the charging IC. Our plan was to use the UBBL07 as the Battery and it will always be attached to the IC. Datasheet attached below.
I noticed that the UBBL07 Battery specs out to hold voltage at 4.2V until current declines to 610mA for a full charge:

So I took at a look at the IC and the specified charging has termination current threshold at 400mA at most:

If I am reading this correctly, it means the IC will not terminate charging before the battery hits 610 mA, in which case I can't use the UBBL07 Battery for this IC. Am I reading this correctly or I am misunderstanding something?
  • Hi team,

Not sure if the images in the first posted attached so want to include them here again.

    Thanks and best,

  • Hi Jerry,

Since ideal charge level for battery is 80%, I would also like to check if this termination current issue can be bypassed if we were to charge the battery using 80% (3.7V) of voltage level. Base on your team's experience, how does your customers charge their battery if they didn't want a full charge for battery longevity reasons?

    Thanks,

      Yu Yin

  • Jerry,

The bq24161 maximum termination current is 400mA. This is first battery with higher than 400mA termination current that I have seen. What are your other requirements for a charger (max current current, input voltage, dual input, etc)? Perhaps I can find another solution that meets your needs?
  • Is there a recommended battery for this charger that is high in capacity/Ah?

Would setting the volt(reg) to be at 3.7V(80%) instead of full capacity bypass this termination current issue?

If not, then a charge that allows:

    • Powering of system while charging battery
    • Thermal sensing
    • low back feed currents into the charger
    • supports high capacity battery.
  • Hi Yu,

Any battery that is okay with a termination current of 400mA or less (18650) is recommended. As you have said, setting the VREG lower will accomplish the same as higher termination current. BQ25600 or bq25601 might work for you.
