BQ24072: Battery over discharge shutdown.

Part Number: BQ24072
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25120A

Hi,

I wanted a battery charge managing IC for a typical 4.2V Lithium-ion cell. I was looking at the datasheet of this particular IC BQ24072, and found that it has over charge automatic shutdown, but couldn't find anything on over discharge protective shut down or any similar feature which will disable the battery from discharging below a voltage threshold.

Does this IC has any such feature or can be implemented using any reference design which is available?

Thanks

Brosnan

  • Hello Brosnan,
The BQ24072 does has short circuit protection but not over discharge protection which turns off the BATFET when the battery voltage is below a certain level. The BQ25120A has this feature but it charges at 300mA. What charge current are you looking for?
  • Thanks for your reply Raheem,

The BQ2520A is a BGA package IC, I don't won't to go for that package type. Is there any other IC that you can recommend?

Or alternatively can I implement a discrete circuit with BQ24072 which will monitor the battery voltage and when it reaches a threshold after discharging a trigger can be applied to the SYSOFF pin turning it high which inturn will open the BATFET to stop any further discharge of battery? Also a input adapter detection circuit will be required to close the BATFET for charging by grounding the SYSOFF pin.

Are there any reference designs to help me with this?

    Thanks

    Brosnan

  • Brosnan,
Soem batteries come with protectors that open when the battery goes below a certain voltage. What voltage do you plan on having this threshold at?
  • Brosnan,
    Is this issue solved?
