BQ25881: Standalone operation

Part Number: BQ25881
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: EV2400, BQSTUDIO, BQ25882

Dear TI,

I was wondering if the bq25881 can be used as a standalone device?

For example, once the configurations are all set up with bqStudio and the EV2400, will it operate as a powerpath management system accepting a charge and providing power to the system?

Also, if power to system is provided by the battery only (2S configuration) can it output 5V up to 2A?

I imagine this could be set up with bqStudio.

If the answers are yes to the above questions, this is a perfect new solution for several applications!

Thanks much,

Kevin

  • Hi Kevin,

Once the registers are configured, with watchdog timer disable, the charger runs with those register settings, unless certain faults occur. Some of those faults require an I2C write in order for the charger to resume operation. If the battery voltage false below the BATUVLO threshold, the registers reset to defaults.

The charger can be provide up to 5V/2A at VBUS, powered by the boost converter running in reverse as a buck converter powered by the battery.
  • Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the quick reply. I have a couple more quick quesitons:
Can the 5V/2A be supplied to the System Load when running only on the battery?
I have version 1.3.54.1 of bqStudio and the bq2588x doesn't appear as an device. What version is required to configure it?

    Thanks,
    Kevin
  • Kevin,

SYS is connected to BAT via a single FET so the maximum voltage at SYS can only be the battery voltage. The 5V in the OTG will appear at PMID and VBUS, with current limit protection from the VBUS output only.

bq25881 is in preview only with RTM expected in 2019Q1. The bq25882 is a similar version with limited release in WSCP package. Its software is in BQStudio.
