LM5165: FMEA

Part Number: LM5165

I am a part of a R&D project of a leading automotive company in my country . I am currently stationed in a pump motor project . I would like to know the FMEA of LM 5165 - Q1 at design level . Or if that is not possible , I would like to know the basic FMEA guidelines of a buck converter. Thanks in advance .

  • Hi,

In power converter designs, a few things you must take into account from a reliability point of view are:
    1. Stability analysis
    2. Thermal performance

Failure to take into account the two design considerations mentioned above will result in unstable device operation and/or device failure.

The data sheet, as well, the new Webench Power Designer are two useful tools in aiding you in the design process (links below)

    www.ti.com/.../lm5165-q1.pdf
    www.ti.com/.../webench-power-designer.html

The data sheet will give you recommended component choice values (see pp.27 of datasheet) , for your given design parameters (VIN range, VOUT, IOUT, etc.) to provide you will stable operation. Additionally, it will provide you will layout recommendations to achieve the device performance mentioned in the datasheet (see pp.35 of datasheet) and good thermal performance.

Webench will give you the same information, as well, provide you with some typical performance and stability analysis plots.

I would recommend trying out both resources and comparing your results.

    Hopefully this answers your question!
