BQ34Z100-G1: Input Power

Hello!

I'm planning to use a BQ34Z100-G1 Fuel Gauge for battery life cycle testing. I'll be using the following configuration as shown in the BQ34Z100EVM datasheet:

However, here there isn't any external supply to power the BQ34Z100EVM So, where is the BQ34Z100EVM deriving its power from? Is it deriving it from the computer/battery or the battery charger? Is there any provision to power it via a power supply?

Hi Ved,

The BQ34Z100 EVM derives the device power from the BAT+ connector of the EVM (not from the PC). So it will be getting power from the battery or charger (or a power supply if a supply is connected). In addition to the EVM User's Guide, there is also a new Quick Start guide on using the EVM: www.ti.com/.../sluubv2.pdf

So suppose I'm discharging the battery via an external DC load which draws current at 1C. Now , the fuel gauge too will be drawing some current from the battery. So will the current drawn by the gauge would be significant as compared to the discharge current value? If it is so, then it will violate the test condition of discharging at 1C.

The fuel gauge current will be very small and insignificant in comparison to the discharge current. You can see the typical supply current values in the device datasheet for reference.
