You mentioned that the BQ29700 can handle a reverse polarity condition provided there is adequate resistance in series with the BAT pin - greater than about 300 ohms, depending on the cell voltage. Can you please verify that in the event of a reverse polarity condition the BQ29700 will hold both FETs in the off state? It does not look there is any path for current to flow based on the functional block diagram in the data sheet, but it is only a block diagram! You would only need to verify that the charge FET is held off during reverse polarity because the body diode of the discharge FET would be forward biased.
