EMB1428Q: Reason for Schottky diode D24

In the EM1402 reference design schematic (see link below) on page 4, there is a schottky diode D24 and resistor R86. These components are not present in the typical application schematic in the EMB1428Q datasheet.

What is their purpose? Are they a required protection circuit? In our design, the EMB1428Qs sometimes fail permanently (fail to charge the cell). Replacing the EMB1428Q fixes the problem. We are wondering if our omission of these components could be the reason.

    These components are for extra transient protection. Once scenario where these would protect the device is for example during hotplug events. If you have large transients you could end up exceeding the abs max of the pin and damage the device.
