TLV1117: why TLV1117 is not stable with ceramic output cap, but TLV1117LV is stable with ceramic output cap?

Part Number: TLV1117

Hi,

1. why TLV1117 is not stable with ceramic output cap, but TLV1117LV is stable with ceramic output cap?

2. Do we have plan to release TLV1117 stable with 0-ESR output ceramic cap? Are there any trade-off/cost to make LDO stable with 0-ESR output ceramic cap?

  • Hi Howard,

TLV1117 and TLV1117LV have different designs and design typologies. While they were designed to target similar applications, the more modern TLV1117LV was designed to be stable with a ceramic output capacitor while TLV1117 requires some ESR. You can use TLV1117 with a ceramic output capacitor if you place a resistor in series with the capacitor to satisfy the ESR requirements.

We will not release a version of TLV1117 that is ceramic stable; however, we are continuously developing new linear regulators that are ceramic stable. These regulators will have their own family name.

    Very Respectfully,
    Ryan
