BQ40Z50-R2: BQ40z50-R2 in slave mode configuration

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ4050, BQSTUDIO, BQ40Z50

Hello,

I would like to configure BQ40z50-R2 in slave mode.

Let me know, following features can be configured in slave mode.

1. IATA Shut down

2. Parallel cell balancing

3. cell swelling (bq40z50-R2 has settings for charging voltage degradation based on temperature, Voltage and cycle count to reduce the charging voltage and delay the onset of cell swelling)

4. Low temperature configuration (bq40z50-R2 has an improved transient model that will better estimate capacity at the start of discharge at low temperature).

5. cell impedance update issues - (For some applications that discharge close to empty, the bq4050 CEDV gauge may make more sense in this situation).

6. State of health.

7. Balancing during sleep [CBS] - (allows the cells to be balanced even when the device goes to sleep).

Regards,

Harish.

  • Hi Harish,
I am not sure if I understand the question correctly, so please excuse me if my answer does not seem relevant.
Our gauges are typically SMBus slave devices with default address of 0x16, so there is nothing special to configure them in slave mode.
All of these parameters can be configured either using bqStudio or a host processor, but in general the recommendation is to set these parameters during production and then sealing the device so that the settings can not be accidentally modified in the system.

  • Hello,

    Thanks for your support.

    Need clarification on below query.

BQ40z50 datasheet 8.3.15 Communications" section says IC can be used in master mode.
There is no clear information in datasheet about default mode configuration of IC. Please do let me know the default configuration of BQ40Z50-R2 and how can we change the modes? (slave mode to master mode and vice versa)
    Regards,
    Harish.
  • Hello,

Waiting for the feedback on BQ40z50-R2 slave mode/master mode configuration setting?

    Regards,

    Harish.

  • Hi Harish,
The master mode as per the SBS specification, and is only for commanding voltage and current to a charger.
Also, it can broadcast any alerts.
It is not a general master mode device.

    Swami
