BQ40Z60: Protection thresholds

Part Number: BQ40Z60
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO

Hello,

I'm currently setting protections parameters using the bq40z60. I have some questions related to the thresholds.

1) Regarding CUV, which value should I put, compared to the cut-off discharge voltage given by the battery's datasheet? 10% more?

2)Regarding COV, which value should I put for safety? Would 90% of the maximum charging voltage be fine?

3) I have the same kind of questions for overcurrent in charge and discharge.

In short, are there usual values compared to the cells' datasheet values to use as protection thresholds?

Thank you.

Regards,

Marie

  • 1. CUV is when the cell is below the operating region. So if your terminate voltage is 3V, set CUV to 2800mV
    2. Same as CUV but in the other direction, if Max Chg V is 4200mV, set COV to 4250mV
    3. That would depend on how many cells in series and parallel you have. If your battery is rated for 1Ah, setting 1.5A a OC threshold would be OK.

No DS would specify it, but if you look at bqStudio defaults, you can get an idea about how these thresholds are determined.
