Hello; I'm curious as to why your reference design uses a transformer with a reset winding, since it's using an active clamp for this?

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Jeffrey,

    If I understand your question correctly, the active clamp topology used here has a transformer so that's why it is in the reference design. I can share some material on this topology if you're interested.

  • Hello Taylor;
    My question is, why does the reference design use a transformer which includes the traditional reset winding (unused), since your forward converter uses an active clamp to reset the core?
  • Hi Jeffrey,

    This is a good point and I am not positive why this particular transformer was originally chosen as this is a relatively older design. However, I assume this was chosen due to the desired electrical characteristics and not because it included the auxiliary winding. If you are asking because you want to use a different transformer in your design - try to match the specifications as closely as possible.

    Best Regards,
