LM2937: Aluminum and Ceramic Capacitor in parallel for Output

Part Number: LM2937

The datasheet recommends that a Tantalum capacitor be used in parallel with an Aluminum cap for the output.

Can you use a ceramic capacitor instead?

  • Hi Joseph,

Yes, the LM2937 will be stable with a ceramic output capacitor of at least 10 uF since ceramic capacitors have ESR on the order of tens of milliOhms. This will place the regulator well within the stable region shown in Figure 19 across the full load current range.

TI recommends using X5R or X7R ceramic capacitors due to their minimum variation in both capacitance and ESR over temperature.

    Thanks,

    Gerard
