BQ25504: Changing the PV cells by a non-rechargeable battery

Part Number: BQ25504
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25505,

Hi,

My product has to work with a regular battery or with a rechargeable battery and a PV panel by only changing a jumper or a switch.

So my idea was to have two modes:

 1. Changing the PV cells by a non-rechargeable battery and shunting the storage element to GND.
 2. The PMIC use the PV cells and the storage element.

Is possible to do this on the BQ25504 or BQ25505? If not, what is the best way to accomplish this?

Best regards.

  • Renato,

The BQ25505 automatically switches the VSTOR output, configured to power your system, between non-rechargeable battery and rechargeable battery based on the VBAT_OK threshold. When the rechargeable battery drops below the VBAT_OK threshold, presumably because the solar panel is not available or not providing enough power, the VSTOR output is switched to the non-rechargeable battery.
  • Hi Jeff F,

The BQ25504 don't have a VBAT_PRI, I can change the PV cells with a non-rechargeable battery or is not a good practice?

  • Renato,

If you asking whether you can use the non-rechargeable battery to power the charger at VIN_DC, then yes, as long as the battery at VIN_DC is less than the desired voltage set by the VBAT_OV resistors. The BQ255xx chargers are boost chargers and so the output voltage at VSTOR=VBAT(_SEC) must be higher than the desired input voltage.
