Questions of TPS54618

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54618

We have questions about TPS54618.

Question 1.

In datasheet p.29 Figure.42,

Please tell us the condition of switching frequency.

We want to know the transient response when switichng frequency is ~500kHz.

Do you have any data?

Question 2.

Please tell us the method to improve efficiency of TPS54618.

For example, low switching frequency or external parts?

Please tell us your solution.

Best regards,

Takahiro Nishizawa

  • Nishizawa-san,

For question 1 the switching frequency is 1 MHz.  W do not have specific data for 500 kHz.

Generally, you can improve efficiency by reducing Fsw and reducing the inductor losses (lower DCR and core losses).

  • Thank you for your answer!

How does transient response change When switching frequency drops?

  • Nishizawa-san,

There are a lot of moving parts in that question. If you have two circuits, one optimized for 1 MHz and another optimized for 500 kHz, you would get better transient response from the 1 MHz design. On the other hand, I could design an optimized 500 kHz circuit that would have much better transient response than a less than optimum 1 MHz 0r even 2 MHz design. As I said there are a lot of variables, output capacitors and inductor, compensation network, etc. With two identical circuits with only the switching frequency changed, I think the differences would be subtle.
