UCC28780: Topology check

Part Number: UCC28780
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PMP8380

Hi team,

Does ACFlyback suitable for DCDC converter? 30V to 14V 110W

Thanks

Tom

  • Hi Tom,

Thanks for your interest in UCC28780. This input voltage range hasn't been used with ACF before so the design would have some risk. Would active clamp forward be acceptable for your design? Something similar to PMP8380 perhaps:http://www.ti.com/tool/pmp8380

  • Hi Ben,

What kinds of risk do ACFlyback which applied in Vin=30V/Vo=14V 110W have? Due to the cost impact, does it possible to show a simple comparison and risks? Thanks a lot!

    Tom
  • Hi Tom,

This type of input range and power level hasn't been attempted with ACFlyback before. I don't have any specific risks in mind regarding the topology itself , only the lack of history using this topology for this type of design spec.

I would think the ACForward might be a little cheaper as you wouldn't need to depletion FET for switch node sensing and you wouldn't need external mosfet drivers. You can also use the transformer windings to do self driven synchronous rectification with ACForward instead of using a dedicated SR controller. ACForward will probably run at lower switching frequency than what ACFlyback would do so ACForward would likely be a larger solution size.
