USB 5V Output

Hi Team,

I am trying to use a dedicated USB charger (AC to DC wall wart + USB cable) to create 5V and connect to a board that will drive LEDs. On the board with the LEDs, do I need a device that will allow the USB charger to provide current to my board? Essentially, does my LED board need to perform some sort of handshake with the USB wall wart in order to receive power? If the answer is "yes", and you have a recommendation, that would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Jared,

    It depends on what kind of port you have in your board.

    If it's a micro B or mini B type of port then you need nothing for handshake. Type-B port have 5V available at all the time. However, if you need more than 500mA then you might need BC1.2 support, BC1.2 is not required for currents less than 500mA in a Type-B port.

    If it's a USB Type-C port then you need to have a basic pull-down of 5.1K on both the CC lines as long as the VBUS voltage is limited to 5V, for higher VBUS voltages you'll need PD controllers.
