BQ40Z50-R2: Questions regarding BQStudio & BQ40z50-R2

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO, BQ40Z50

Hello,

I have an ongoing discussion regarding BQ40z50-R2 using BQStudio. A few questions popped up when discussing this:

Under the tab: "Advance Charge Algorithm" ( in BGStudio ) there is a square which says "Voltage", is this nominal or "open-circuit voltage"? Next up, it is possible to activate cell balancing in the GUI, can you see in the GUI if cell balancing is being processed? My last question, is it possible to charge and discharge BQ40z50 at the same time?

With Regards & thanks for your time,
Kristoffer

  • Hi Kristoffer,
    1. Under "Data Memory"-> Advanced Charge Algorithm", you can set the charging voltage for the different JEITA temperature ranges. This is the CV voltage that you are telling the gauge that you will charge to at these temperatures.
    2. It is not possible to activate cell balancing by issuing a command. If cell balancing is enabled in your "Balancing Configuration" and the gauge detects capacity difference that needs to be balanced, it will enable balancing. the TRM has more details on all the conditions that need to be met for the balancing. You can check if cell balancing is active by looking at the [CB] bit by looking at BIt12 of "Operation Status B" in the "Register" screen of bqStudio.
    3. If the current detected is > "Chg current threshold" then the gauge will detect charging, if the current detected is < -"Dsg Current Threshold" the gauge will detect discharge, and if the absolute value of current detected is < "Quit Current", it will detect a relax state.
    Regards,
