BQ40Z50-R1: Balancing Configuration [CBR]

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R1

Currently I am reading sluubc1d.pdf.
I would like to ask about cell balance ON / OFF setting.

p.55
The cell balancing at rest can be enabled separately by setting Balancing Configuration [CBR] = 1.

p.137
CBR(Bit2): Cell balancing at rest

Does 'at rest' point to RELAX mode?
Is it OK with below?

cell balance
CB: at CHARGE Mode
CBR: at RELAX Mode

  • Hi,
The only difference between REST and RELAX is that once |Curren| < "Quit Current" for the "Chg or Dsg Relax Time", the pack will be in RELAX.
Once the cell voltages have become stable and are not increasing or decreasing anymore (typically 30 minutes to 5 hrs), the pack can be said to be in REST.
[CBR] bit can enable cell balancing in REST. Also, it is good to note that occasionally the gauge will need to measure the OCV to update the DOD, and cell balancing may be paused for ~30 minutes to allow the cells to reach a REST state to take this measurement when you are have [CBR] enabled.

  • Dear Swami,

Thank you for the detailed information.
I understood the following 1-3. Is it OK?

    1. Strictly it is RELAX != REST. State transitions are in the order of A to E.
    A. Chg or Dsg mode
    B. Chg or Dsg Relax time
    C. RELAX mode
    D. 30min to 5hr passed. The voltage of the cell stabilized.
    E. REST (cell rest)

    2. REST is not one of the GasGauge-Operating-Mode. It is a true rest state different from immediately after entering RELAX mode.

    3. If CBR = 1 is set, cell balancing is performed at REST.

  • Hi Peter,
    Your description is correct.
