BQ25890H: when OTG mode active, can we detect when charger is connected?

Part Number: BQ25890H
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25895

Hello,

We are using BQ25890H in a product we are developing.

I just discovered that OTG mode is NOT automatically turned off and NOT changed to buck charger mode when a charger is connected to the USB port. Is this like this?

Any way to change this behaviour or detect that a charger has been connected in order to manually (from host MCU) turn off OTG mode and charge battery? (because battery is not charged while OTG is on, and because connecting our boost 5V to charger 5V can cause problems I believe if they do not match exactly.

Thank you very much for your support,

  • Luis,

The BQ25890H determines that a power source has been connected to VBUS by looking for a rising voltage on VBUS. If OTG is active, there can be no rising edge.

The BQ25895 outputs OTG to PMID not VBUS and so will automatically disable OTG and start charge, after a short delay, when VBUS is connected.
  • Hey Luis,

That is correct. This feature is only on the BQ25895 device as it was designed around the Power Bank application. Because the OTG output on this device is also on VBUS, there is no way to sense the presence of a separate input being applied.

I would suggest changing to the BQ25895.
