LM5175: Maximum output current

Hi Guys, The LM5175 spec indicate maximum output current 20A. However the chip uses external FETs for the switching. Assuming the FETs are of low gate charges, the input range is narrow (3:1), and input-output differential is small (say 20V input and 15V output), and a proper current sense resistor is chosen, what is the limiting or determining factor for the maximum output current as far as the chip is concerned?

Hi Ram,

You are correct. The output current can be higher than 20A since this device is a controller. The 20A is just a reasonable estimate of what the maximum output current should be. This estimate is based on component size, the number of MOSFETs that will be driven, etc.

What is the desired output current for your application?

I would also suggest using the LM5176. This is the next generation of the LM5175.
