LM5066I: LM5066I wont communicate with FT2232H mini module. FT2232H is able to connect to the computer but the GUI software never detects anything

Part Number: LM5066I
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5066, LM5066EVK
This is the exact problem listed in this locked thread;
Basically I installed all the drivers, connected a load to the output of the LM5066I, powered it up at 48V and no matter what I do I am unable to communicate with the LM5066I. I tried several computers and tried to reinstall everything several times.
Please help.
Ray
  • Hi Ray,

    Welcome to E2E!
    Sorry for the inconvenience. Like the issue in the other thread, Are you also not able to see LM5066I when you do rescan ?

    Best Regards,
    Rakesh
  • Hi Ray,

    Sorry for the late response. Let me take this opportunity to wish you a happy new year.

    Can you please confirm the version of the tool you are using. Have you downloaded from www.ti.com/.../tools-software.html ?

    Best Regards,
    Rakesh
  • Hi Ray,

    Can you check and confirm.

    Best Regards,
    Rakesh
  • I've tried several times to install and re-install the software to no avail, I even tried two separate computers and still nothing. I even purchased a 2nd demo board and it still wont work. I think the board is working but the FT2232H board is not relaying the communication.

  • Hi Ray,

    If no devices are displaying then it is very likely a problem with the FTDI driver installed on the PC. Can you try below steps..

    1. Terminate the PI-Commander GUI application.

    2. Unplug the FT2232h-based host adapter and use the application’s system submenu to un-install the FTDI driver. Go to start menu -> Texas Instruments-> PI Commander ->Advanced -> FTDI -> Uninstall drivers

    3. Use the same submenu to install the compatible device driver, which is bundled with the application distribution.

    4. Plug in the FT2232h-based host adapter to an available USB port and wait approximately 30 seconds for it to be registered in the system’s device driver tables.

    5. Connect the I2C port of the host adapter to the like port of the EVM.

    6. Apply the EVM power.

    7. Launch the GUI and attempt to communicate with the EVM.

    Hope this resolves..

    Best Regards,

    Rakesh

  • Thanks Rakesh,

    I have tried this several times and each time I am unable to communicate with the EVM. No amount of installs or uninstalls is producing a different result. I have also tried on a separate computer to no avail.

    I think the issue is the USB interface adapter that came with the demo kit. Is there another (more reliable) adapter that I can get as a workaround? I really would like to make some progress on my project and the solution out of the box is not working for me.

    Ray

  • I am purchasing a third EVM and a different FTDI connector. Maybe something was dead on arrival.

    Maybe something is wrong with my setup, I have 100Ohms connected at the output, Vin is set to 48V, S1 is activated and LM5066 is running drawing 0.48A. See anything amiss here??

    The only progress I have made is with another FTDI, it recognizes it as hpa172-0, under that we see an unknown device;

  • Another thing I wanted to bring up is the orientation of the FTDI connector, nowhere in the documentation does it illustrate the correct orientation. I had to find an image on the internet. With symmetrical adapters such as this it can very confusing.
  • Hi Ray,

    Your setup connection is correct. It was mentioned in LM5066EVK. I think, setup connection figure is missing in LM5066i-EVM. I will take care to get it placed.

    Best Regards,
    Rakesh
  • I am using the following board: LM50661EVM-626

    That shouldn't make a difference, correct?

    What are the next steps Rakesh? What else can I do to establish communication with the LM5066?

  • The documentation is also incorrect, it references something called PMBusManager and that program does not come with the installation instructions.

  • I received my THIRD Evaluation kit, still no communication. I've tried three different computers and installations and nothing works.

    I would like to escalate this support ticket, there's something wrong with the devices I have received and I would like to know what I can do to get a working device in my possession.
  • Hi Ray,

    Please reach out to your local TI Sales/Field team. They will help you.
    If you are not in touch with any one. Share your organization details so that I can connect to them.

    Best Regards,
    Rakesh
  • Sure I'll be more than happy to speak with someone to get this board to communicate. Here is my contact information;

    rklucik@google.com

    I don't know whom to reach out to so if you could put them in touch with me that would be best.

  • The instructions state the following;

    "The LM5066IEVM is supplied with the PMBus address set to 0x40 as dictated by the jumper configuration of the ADR0, ADR1, and ADR2 jumper connections."

    but the pins are all set to low. What are your pins set to? Could this be the issue?

  • Hi Ray,

    We have local holiday today. I can check address line settings on my EVM tomorrow and update you.

    Best Regards,
    Rakesh
  • Morning Rakesh, hope you had a good holiday. Could you let me know the switch settings?

  • Hoping to hear from you soon.

    I am not finding any communication from SDA (TP16) on power up so I don't think communication will be possible since this tells me the microcontroller is not communicating.
  • Hi Ray,

    The address line switches are set to 0x40 (high Z position) on my EVM. This setting is to assign an address to a device when multiple devices are connected on PMBus, this should not lead to the problem you are facing.

    Best Regards,
    Rakesh
  • A representative from TI tested an FTDI controller that came with his eval kit and it didn't work. He tried a different FTDI and it worked for him. He then delivered it to my office, I connected it and it started working immediately. I now have access to the development tools!

    The issue is the FTDI controllers that you are shipping with the Eval kits. I ordered 3 of them and all 3 were faulty.

    Thank you for following up with me and getting me up and running Rakesh.

    Best.

    Ray
