LM5020: bypass capacitor, parts placement, pattern recommendation

Part Number: LM5020

Hello,

The customer would like to know the title information. Is all information ok to see "LM5020EVAL", evaluation board?

The customer would like to know how far is acceptable "as close as possible" for bypass capacitor. My feeling is less than 2 or 3mm range is better.

Would you share your thought how far is ok for this?

Best regards,

Toshihiro Wananabe

  • Hi Watanabe-san,

Thank you for asking. There is no absolute distance. It is just a recommendation not to place the cap too far, because the PCB trace impedance (resistance and inductance) will reduce the effectiveness of the bypass capacitor. "As close as possible" means to be the closest of allowable to the IC relative pins on the PCB. Your 2 ~3mm is not bad.

    Thanks,
    Youhao
  • Hello Xi-san,

Thank you for your answer. I think your answer for bypass capacitance is good description.

By the way, is it ok the EVM schematic and layout are recommended for the customer design? The customer feels 4.7uF bypass capacitor is big but it is recommended, right?

    Best regards,

    Toshihiro Watanabe
