BQ76940: for 16S BAT application

Part Number: BQ76940
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76930, TIDA-01093

Hi Team,

My customer plan to use BQ76940 for a 16S BAT balance application, enclose is the sch(7245.BQ76940 16S.pdf), and the nets named 'P1.31', 'ADC_16CH' is controled by their external processor, it's not the typical application of BQ76940 and could you kindly help to review the sch and share your suggestion if any.

  • Hi Cheney,

I looked through the schematic and I have a few comments, but the approach they have used to enable 16S (on a 15S part) is not something we have tested for this device.

    A few things I noticed:
    - The resistor value on the ALERT pin is much smaller than the recommended typical value of 500k to 1M.
    - They should use a 10k NTC thermistor. We also recommend a capacitor on the thermistor pin.
    - I cannot see the capacitor values for all of the caps in their schematic, so I am not sure if the values are okay or not.
    - For R141 and R145 (resistors from C0 to VSS), I haven't seen resistors used here before.
    - The sense resistor should have 100 ohm series resistors for each side.
    - The device wakes up from SHIP mode by pulling the TS1 pin high. They need to make sure this is considered.

Another approach they could consider for their 16S application: They can view our 20S reference design using 2 BQ76930 devices (TIDA-01093). This might be a safer approach since it has been tested.

    Best regards,
    Matt
