EM1402EVM: Power management forum

Part Number: EM1402EVM

Hi all,

The question is related to EM1402EVM and how charging and discharging the battery pack.

My goal is to monitoring the charging and discharging while the battery pack supply a Driver motor + BLDC motor.

My problem is that I want to charging the battery pack with a charger directly in the signals Pack+ and Pack- (CHARGING PROCESS) and supply a LOAD == Driver+BLDC motor (DISCHARGING PROCESS) but not in But I don't have clear if it is posible to use that signals.

Thanks for advance.

  • Hello,

Thanks for your question. The charger or the load would be connected to the PACK+ and PACK- points as you described on your diagram. I am confused on what you mean by "CHG" and "DSG" on your diagram. The circuit that you circled in red is for active cell balancing, nothing to do with charging or discharging process. Could you please clarify?

    Best regards,
    Leslie
  • Hi Leslie,

Thanks for your reply. In the last message I forgot to explain the circuit that I circled in red...I wanted to ask if that circuit was to dedicated to charging and discharging the battery instead of using the Pack +/Pck- signals...But now I've more clear the idea...

Now, I would like to know if there is any advice or reference design to charging and discharging a battery using the pack+ and pack- signals while it's use the EM1408EVM to monitoring (and do the active cell balancing) the charging and discharging process...The context is that I have a battery pack with the next characteristics

    • VCHG,max= 54,6V
    • Vnominal = 46,8V
    • ICHG,max = 2A
    • IDCHG,max = 8A
    • VDCHG,min = 39V
    • Q = 3,350 Ah

What do you recommend to me to charge the batteryt? Thanks for advance.

    Best regards,

  • Hello,

Ok. Yes, the circuit you circled in red above is to do active cell balancing, not for the actual battery stack charger or load.

We don't have a reference design that includes the EM1402EVM for cell balancing plus a charger. You would connect either the charger or the load to the PACK+ and PACK- pins as you indicated by the "PACK+" and "PACK-" test points in your diagram.

Regarding your request for a recommendation on charger, could you please give me more details on what you want to know about the charger? This way I can redirect your question to the right person in our group.

    Best regards,
    Leslie
  • Hi jpach,

TI doesn't have a charger IC that can charge that large of a pack. I recommend searching www.ti.com/.../reference-designs.html for battery charger reference design using multiple ICs.
