SG3524: SG3524BN cross reference IC not working

Part Number: SG3524

Hi Ashish,

We are qualifying PWM controller from TI MPN:SG3524N for obsolete part SG3524BN from Microsemi.

Datasheet and technical parameters are matching with older part. However, functionality wise TI SG3524N IC is not working for older part.

Please find attached trade off of these parts. Let me know your inputs on this.

Regards,

Parimal

  • Hello Parimal

The Microsemi site says this part is still in production - why do you think it is going obsolete ?

Have you found out why the TI part is not working - for example, can you check the RT, CT and OSC pins to see if the chip is running. Is the oscillator running at the expected frequency.
Have you checked that the shutdown pin is at 0V or close to it. Pulling SHUTDOWN high will disable the controller.

It's not uncommon for parts from different manufacturers to have subtle differences which make them not completely 100% drop in replacements but from what I can see I'm sure that the TI SG3524N can be made to work in your application.

By the way, the trade off you mentioned was not attached.

Please let me know how you get on
    Regards
    Colin
  • Microsemi says that this lifecycle is over thats why need to go for alternate part.

Yes RT,CT and OSC pins are OK as per voltage level. However pin1 and pin 2 of SG3524BN IC is at 4.2V instead of 4.9V in original IC.

This is the original circuit as per attached image.

  • Hello Parimal

Please send me the waveforms at the CT and OSC pins and a full schematic so that I can understand better how you are using this part. If you don't want to post the schematic on this public forum then please send it to me at colingillmor@ti.com

  • Hello Parimal
We have moved this thread onto email so I'm going to close it. If we reach any conclusions which are not specifically related to your application I'll note them here later.
