BQ29700: How to prevent tripping during connection

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ51050B

Hi

Battery charging and termination is now happening for me. But one more issue is triggered now. We are using battery protection IC BQ29700DSET in our design. We had initially an issue with this protection IC, module is not turning on once the battery is connected. But when we shorted V- pin of BQ29700DSET to battery negative for an instant load current has been taken from the battery. When charge termination is happened some times the module is taking load automatically, but sometimes 0 load is taken and we have to remove charger and short V- pin to battery negative once again to restart the module. As a product we cannot do instant short V- pin to battery GND every time. What may be the problem?

  • Hi Hafiz
After the device is woken up, it is not supposed to go into shutdown mode again. You need to determine the cause of the shutdown on your board. ESD? Safety condition?
    thanks

  • Hi Onyx,
Thanks for your suggestion. I am suspecting the termination accuracy of BQ51050B. If charge termination and end of power transfer is not send by BQ51050B, transmitter will continue charging battery no? If that happens battery overcharge protection will be taken care by protection IC BQ29700DSET and the device will go to shutdown mode. I am charging 180mah battery with maximum charge current of 170mah and termination current above 40mA. I found in forums that charger IC BQ51050B will not accurately terminate charge when termination current is set below 30 or 32mA. Will this be an issue?
  • Hi Hafiz,

I am not certain that could be the issue but it is worth testing out to see if it fixes your problem
    thanks
