BQ24773EVM-540: CC-CV charging profile

Part Number: BQ24773EVM-540
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24773

Hello, I'm trying to charge a battery in the CC-CV mode (I've attached an image of CCCV charging's current and voltage profiles below). Earlier, I used a sourcemeter for this purpose, which had an inbuilt CC-CV profile. In that case, I was required to input a CV charge termination current, i.e. the value to which the current would taper to in the CV mode, after which the CV charging would be stopped. Using this value, the SMU charged the battery with its inbuilt charging profile for the CV phase.

Now, I want to use the BQ24773EVM-540 for CCCV charging. Does it have an inbuilt CV profile, or do we have to define one? And if yes, how do we do it? Also, BQ24773 doesn't require any input to switch to CV after the CC phase has ended right?

  • Hello Ved,

BQ24773 supports the CC-CV charging profile you show. When battery is below the voltage set in register 0x15 (MaxChargeVoltage register), the device will operate in CC mode, unless battery is very depleted and it will first go through a precharge stage. When the battery voltage reaches the value set in register 0x15, it will transition from CC to CV.

The BQ24773 does not automatically terminate charge and relies on an external microcontroller to manually terminate charge. Usually the microcontroller will determine the correct time to terminate charge by reading a gas gauge IC on the battery pack.

    Regards,
