BQ4050: Suggest few charge controller ic to use with bq4050

Part Number: BQ4050
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24770, BQ24610

Hii,
I used bq4050 to make BMS for 4-cell battery pack. Now I need a charge controller that works with BQ4050. So suggest me few charge controller ic's that are compatible with BQ4050 with low BOM.

Best,
Mahesh

  • Hi Mahesh,

I assume these are LiIon/LiPolymer batteries and not LiFePO4? What is the battery capacity and desired maximum charge current? Do you have I2C/SMBus available to control the charger or do you want stand alone? What is your input power source voltage and current?
  • Hi Jeff F,

Thanks for your reply. Yes the batteries are LiPolymer. The battery capacity is 4400 mah (4 cell pack) @ 16.8v desired charge current is 4.4 A. I think BQ4050 has SMBus to control the charger. When it comes to with SMBus protocol or standalone I'm ok with anything that works efficiently and has low BOM. The input power source voltage is 16.8v -20v and current is 10 Amps.

    Thank you,
    Best Regards,
    Mahesh.

  • Mahesh,

It is my understanding that the BQ4050 is not an SMBus host. A separate SMBus host (processor) is required to communicate with the gauge. If you have SMBus available then BQ24770 is an SMBus charge controller that might work. If you want a standalone controller, please review the BQ24610.
