BQ78350-R1: hardware protection current limit

Part Number: BQ78350-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78350, BQSTUDIO, BQ76930,

Hello

I'm having difficulties changing the "Over-current in discharge threshold setting" on the BQ78350 companion controller (used in with thew BQ76930 AFE). The hardware protection current limit is tripping at 8A, which corresponds with the 8mV (default value defined by OCD_T3 Bits 3-0 and RSNS =0) produced across my 1mOhm current sense resistor. I wish to increase the hardware protection current limit to 32A, however when I change the AFE PROTECT 2 settings in BQStudio they (PF Status menu) it does seem to change the current limit.

I have set the OCD & OCC limits to 20A - But the hardware protection current limit is tripping at 8A.

Can anyone advise me on the correct way to alter the hardware protection current limit?

Many thanks

Stephen

  • Hi Martin,

The naming for these parameters can be very confusing because the BQ78350-R1 uses different names for these parameters. The BQ78350-R1 has both software and hardware protections for over-current. The hardware based protections allow for faster reaction time to an event, and the software based protections allow for reactions to lower magnitude currents after a longer time period. The OCD and OCC parameters for BQ78350-R! are the software based protections. The hardware based protection parameters that set the AFE PROTECT 2 register are in the 'AOLD' section. (See section 3.6 or the BQ78350-R1 Technical Reference Manual for full a full description).

    Best regards,
    Matt
