LM5164: Efficiency vs. Inductor

Part Number: LM5164

Hello Team,

could you help me to understand, why the efficiency does increase in the quick start calculator with smaller inductors in the region of 1 to 100mA?

At what load is the device operating in pulse skipping mode?

Thanks

Mat

  • Hello Mat,

The LM5164 is a COT converter. The on-time is set by the value of RON’s resistor. As long as the part is running in discontinuous mode, since a smaller inductor will allow a greater charge through during each on pulse, the converter’s frequency is lower. Lower frequency overwhelms the effect of higher peak current giving a higher efficiency.
