TPS92518HV: LED Distance / Cable

Part Number: TPS92518HV
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS92518

Hi Team,

my customer is interested in the TPS92518HV for a next generation product. They found the note in datasheet section 11.1 to place the output capacitor close to the LED if the LED is not directly at the part. But unfortunately the datasheet does not contain a recommendation which maximum distance should be maintained with TPS92518HV between the part and the LED.

So the customers question is:

1. For the specific project they will have a cable of 50 to 100cm length, is this possible?

2. If yes, which measures should be implemented to achieve best results with such length if possible?

3. If #1 yes, what is the maximum cable length which you have tested in the lab? Which is the longest cable you would still see as possible with TPS92518HV?

Thanks in advance

  • Hello Cevin,

    1) Yes this is possible. It has to be analyzed as to how much inductance in in the LED loop versus the capacitor used. We cannot recommend a distance because it is depending on how the connections are made.
    2) Keeping the inductance low and checking the impedance to the LEDs would be beneficial to make sure there are no resonances.
    3) This is dependent on how the LEDs are connected, low inductance source and return or separate paths to and from the LEDs with a large loop. I was told that it was tested up to 4 feet but it does depend on how it is connected.

If you go about this you need to look at 8.3.3.1 on page 16, you may require the diodes from output to Vin to protect the TPS92518.

    Best Regards,
