BQ27742-G1: After trying to program processor we can no longer access data memory

We were trying to follow the programming guide TI provided us to program this gauge from our processor.  In the past we used BQstudio but now in this design the gauge is integrated with the processor board.  We are able to seal and unseal the device fine, however after programming it for the first time, we are no longer able to read the data memory.  Can you think of a something that we might have done that would block us like this?

For the programming we updated design capacity, design energy, cycle count, design voltage(subclass 48) and termination voltage (subclass 82).  Now the gauge still reports voltage and current but capacity is wrong, and we can't read the data memory.
