TPS63070: TPS63070

Part Number: TPS63070
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS63060

Hi

I am using the TPS63070 IC in one of my design for output of 8 V and Load current of 2A ,

The design is working fine  but while checking Load (or)  output  current with adjustable Resistive Load till 600mA while turning on Power supply is working fine but after that when I am reducing the resistive load for >600mA before turning ON  , the current is dropping to 150mA approx. after turning ON supply

In case if I am connecting and adjusting/ varying the  load after turning ON power supply then I can measure up to 2A with out any issue  , Can you confirm whether it is the limitation of start-up current? Even in datasheet pg 21 shows the typical start-up current limitation for 8V o/p is around 750mA ,  and I tried by connecting high Value of capacitors at I/p and o/p up to 100uf , however there is no improvement, Can you check and do the needful?

Thanks,

Praveen

  • Hello Praveen,
you already correctly mentioned that the typical maximum startup current for 8V output is around 700mA into a resistive load.
Is the application load a resistive load?
is it possible in your application to start the converter before applying the load?

    regards,
    Julian
  • Hi Julian,

Thanks for Reply, In my design the 8V from the TPS63070  drives the  eight MMIC amplifiers, each Amplifier consumes around 160mA,  So total  load current  on TPS63070 IC is  1280mA

To verify load current , Ripple voltage  and other parameters , we have connected  the Resistive Load but voltage is dipping when the load is set for >600mA and turning on the supply

We have connected at output around 100uF, i feel that the issue get resolve by connecting more value Capacitors at output around 10×100uf?

Could you comment? I would like to know how your evaluation has carried for such situation?

    Thanks,

    Praveen

  • Hello Praveen,
The TPS63070 limits the inrush current at startup until the output voltage is reached (or power good is high). After that this current limit is removed.
You will not be able to resolve this with higher output cap. You will need to delay the enable of the output load. Would that be possible?
    regards,
    Julian
  • Hello Praveen,

where you able to implement the delay? Please let me know that i can close this thread.
TPS63060 could be an alternative part that does not have a startup inrush current limit.

    regards,
    Julian
  • Yes, we can implement the delay at load( MMIC Amp) which has EN input,Requesting please close this thread

    Thanks
